Overview

RD 500M.23: Radiology Clerkship, MRI Physics
This course is a brief introduction to the physical principles behind the detection of MRI signals and the subsequent use of that signal to create diagnostically useful images.

Topics include:

  • Basic scanner hardware (e.g., magnet, gradient coils, and RF send-receive coils)
  • Magnetic moment and its precession in a static magnetic field
  • The Larmor Equation
  • RF excitation of magnetic moments
  • T1 and T2 relaxation
  • SS, PE, and FE gradients
  • Basic pulse sequences (e.g., SE, FSE, IR, and GRE)
  • Introduction to k-space
